Samuel Sampson Peaks, 35, was arraigned this week stemming from a 2013 cold case involved the armed sexual assault of a stranger at the Minnesota Avenue Metro station, the US attorney’s announced.
According to court documents, in February 2013, Peaks encountered his victim at the station and followed her before brandishing a handgun and forcing her to perform a sexual act.
Once the assault was over, she called the police, who responded and recovered DNA evidence that was tested in 2013, but did not come up with a match. However, it was tested again in 2020 when Peaks was arrested for an unrelated crime in Prince George’s County, and his DNA was again tested.
This time, the Bowie resident was linked to the evidence taken from the armed sexual assault case.
An indictment charging Peaks with the sexual assault was returned in March 2022. He was convicted to prison time on the Prince George’s County case in February this year and then brought back to DC this week to be arrested and arraigned on the 2013 sexual assault.
If convicted, Peaks faces a maximum sentence of life in prison with fines reaching $125,000. He would also have to serve five years of supervised release and would have to register as a sexual offender for the rest of his life.
